Mayor Touts Westside, Advocates Extension of Business Tax Holiday

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa visited tech startup Amplify and praised the Westside’s tech sector for their contributions to the city and ability to bring some of the country’s top talent to LA. He also advocated for the city to extend their popular Business Tax Holiday into 2015. The popular program exempts businesses from paying LA’s business tax for the first three years they are in business and has been a big boost to area startups.

The Westside startup and tech district (dubbed Silicon Beach) is an important driver for future growth and while San Francisco has been getting a lot of attention lately for their startup explosion, the Westside has quite a few big names in tech including Activision Blizzard, Business.com, Demand Media, Electronic Arts, Google, Myspace and THQ.

Villaraigosa toured the offices of Amplify which launched in December 2011 and has already helped develop 14 startups by providing an incubator like environment to early stage entrepreneurs. He also touted the fact he established the Mayor’s Council on Innovation and Industry which is led by 25 executives, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.

Synergy Real Estate Group CEO John Galaxidas recently reviewed the Westside office market and noted that the area has actually a year-over-year drop in asking rates.
