Joel Silver, Major Producers Leaving Lots and Leasing Space

Posted on October 13, 2012 · Posted in Leasing

What’s the newest trend in Hollywood? It’s not bigger explosions, sequels or franchise reboots, rather the latest trend involves major producers going off the lot and leasing their own dedicated production space.

In the past large studios would lease space to top producers but these deals have been on the decline especially after the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike. The studios see the move as a cost cutting measure while producers benefit from having custom production space with their own editing suites and screening rooms.

Joel Silver is the most recent example as he recently moved to the historic Venice Post Office building which he purchased last month. Silver whose recent production credits include the Matrix trilogy, V for Vendetta and Sherlock Holmes touted the benefits of having dedicated production space off the lot in a press conference with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Silver is planning to invest modernization and interior improvements including the restoration of Edward Biberman’s famous “First Thirty Years of Venice’s History” mural.
